NEF Supports a Green, Protected Beaver Valley, Opposes Housing Development Proposed for Talisman Lands

NEF President Rob Leverty presented the Foundation’s position on the Beaver Valley Development Group’s housing proposal at the public meeting (required by Ontario planning legislation) on June 12 hosted by the Municipality of Grey Highlands for the County of Grey.

Given the meeting’s five-minute time limit for each presenter, Rob could only touch on the 50+-year history of successful efforts, by both the provincial government and the community, to protect the Beaver Valley’s natural corridor and the Beaver River’s water quality through the Niagara Escarpment protection program.

Rob explained how the housing (at least 370 units) proposed for the lower Talisman lands beside the river, on or adjacent to a floodplain, would set a dangerous precedent, undermining both the 1990 UNESCO Biosphere designation and the Greenbelt.

NEF followed up via a six-page written submission, with attachments, which you can read here.
