Canada has lost one of its greatest environmental champions. We have all lost a gentle giant for natural heritage and conservation. In 1978, Ron was one of the founders of the Coalition on the Niagara Escarpment (CONE) and his vision and unrelenting commitment led to the adoption in 1985 of the Niagara Escarpment Plan, Canada’s first large-scale environmental land use plan.
As CONE’s Executive Director (1980-82) and Co-Chair (1987-93), I remain forever grateful for his generous wisdom, courageous advocacy, emotional support and inspiring leadership. Ron was indeed a Man for All Seasons and he now joins Lyn MacMillan and Mac Kirk – our indisputable Escarpment heroes who fought against punishing odds to protect our ecological corridors and natural habitats. Nature and our fellow Ontarians, and indeed all Canadians, continue to benefit from and live Ron’s invaluable environmental legacy each and every day.
We are deeply indebted to you, Janet, for making this all possible. Thank you so much. We are thinking of you and sending warmest regards and best wishes to your family and friends.
